Our team of five members arrived just in time for dinner on Sunday, July 19th, at the construction site in Shell, WY. [Many thanks to the Stoner family who loaned us their mini-van that now has another 1,037 miles on the odometer. We plan to drive in reverse all the way home to return it to its original mileage!] The town is settled in a valley with a descent through the Bighorn Mountain Range about two hours south of Billings, MT. Just after we arrived, a brief thunder storm greeted us to cool off the evening. We then met up with our leader at the nearby eatery called "Dirty Annie's" where we ate dinner.
As we inspected the work done by previous mission teams earlier this summer, we could see that the walls have been framed, the steep rafters installed, and everything is sheathed and wrapped. But since the siding hasn't arrived yet, our job will be to install insulation and sheetrock. Jerry Ewen, a former contractor and an elder at the Shell Community Church, has coordinated efforts with the electrician to have everything ready for us to proceed tomorrow morning.
All five of us were then assigned home stays at various locations in this small town of just 50 people. We've been told that the church construction has been a real highlight for the summer and has drawn folks together who don't normally attend the church. It will be a great experience to get to know some of the local folks while we serve and get served in this church remodel project.
Our bible studies throughout the week will focus on the "I AM" statements that Jesus made in the Gospel of John. We pray that we will better understand who our Lord is while working and studying together this week.
